SC TELCO DONATES ADVERTISING SPACE TO MEYER CENTER

Greenville, SC – SC Telco Federal Credit Union recently donated advertising space in The Greenville Journal to the Meyer Center for Special Children. Proceeds from the sale of Honor Cards were used to support therapy and education programs for preschool children with disabilities.
Barbara Martin is the Development Director at The Meyer Center. “(The donation of ad space) was very helpful in making the public aware of the availability of our honor cards”, Martin said.
Jody Powell, Marketing Manager for SC Telco said, “The Meyer Center is a wonderful organization. It is amazing to see their program in action and to watch as special needs children grow and develop. We are just honored to help in any way we can.”

The Meyer Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide quality education and therapy services to preschool children with disabilities. The ad appeared in the November 30, 2007 edition of The Greenville Journal.

ADDISON AWARDED THE ORDER OF THE SILVER CRESCENT

Florence, SC – Brigadier General (ret.) Louis Addison has been awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent, South Carolina’s highest award for volunteerism and community service, at a ceremony held on January 17, 2008 at Osborne’s in Florence, SC. The award was presented by Colonel (ret.) Gene Riley.
General Addison has worked as a volunteer for countless organizations that enrich the community. He has served on the Board of Directors for SC Telco Federal Credit Union since 1988 and as Chairman of the Board from 1993 to 2007. General Addison became involved in the affairs of credit unions statewide through the South Carolina Credit Union League as part of his SC Telco leadership responsibility. He has also served as a board member for the Florence Chamber of Commerce, Pee Dee Regional Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, Kiwanis Club of Florence, Florence Disabilities and Special Needs Board, and House of Hope of The Pee Dee. Additionally, he became a Certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church and has served for over 10 years as a conference committee member. Education is another of General Addison’s contributions to our state, serving as an Adjunct Professor of Business with Southern Wesleyan University for several years in their LEAP Program.

Steve Harkins, President/CEO of SC Telco Federal Credit Union said, “Lou Addison has spent most of his adult life working to improve the lives of those around him. I can think of no one more deserving than Lou of this honor. He has served as a board member for many organizations, like SC Telco. Lou was a strong advocate for the organizations he believed in and volunteered thousands of hours to help others. His natural leadership ability was easily recognized by his peers and he became the chairman of the board for several organizations including ours. I can honestly say that our credit union would not have enjoyed nearly the success we have had without his leadership, vision and passion for credit unions. We congratulate Lou on this award."
General Addison’s military career spanned 37 years of active duty and Army Guard service. He is a Korean War veteran, having served with the U.S. Air Force 8th Fighter Bomber Wing in Suwon, Korea. After his active duty, he joined the South Carolina Army National Guard and rose through the ranks from  2nd Lieutenant to becoming one of the highest ranking officers in the state guard. He received many decorations and commendations during his distinguished career.
General Addison was born on May 11, 1932 in Tarpon Springs, Florida and attended the University of South Carolina at Florence and earned an associate of science degree from Mercer College. He resides in Florence with his wife, the former Janie Eddings of Cheraw, SC. They have four children: Louis, Jr; Teresa, David and Linda.

"It is my honor and pleasure to serve on this board as your chairman. Without question, Lou is a driving force behind the growth we have experienced in years past and will continue to experience for years to come. SC TELCO, CAROLINAS CREDIT UNION FOUNDATION DONATES $15,000 TO CARE HOUSE OF THE PEE DEE

The CARE House of the Pee Dee received a $15,000 grant this month from the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation to help in its mission to provide care to child victims of physical and sexual abuse. The $15,000 grant request was made to SC Telco Credit Union, which awarded the money to the CARE House through the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation’s Micro Community Grants Program.

The CARE (Child Abuse Resource and Evaluation) House of the Pee Dee is a child advocacy center established to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team response to suspected or reported cases of child abuse. The grant, received June 3 during a ceremony at the CARE House in Florence, will be used to buy state-of-the art lab equipment to test patients’ blood and urine for infections and diseases, according to Anita Throwe, interim administrative director of the organization.

“We are really blessed to have this,” Throwe said. “We’re blessed with the staff that we have and the community.”

SC Telco branch manager Brian Miller said he helped with the grant process and he feels CARE House is a worthy cause.

“Obviously, anybody would care about the welfare of children. I have four children myself, so it was close to home,” Miller said. “They’re improving the lives of battered children. They are improving the lives of people that live within the community. That’s why they are a terrific choice.”

With the grant, the CARE House also will purchase new computers and a new server to help staff complete everyday tasks.

"Right now, we have five or six computers that were all donated that do not interface. We’ll be able to enter data and pull it up (on any computer) instead of having it on one machine,” Throwe said. “We don’t have to go back and hand-do this. We can get our statistics and be able to track the cases much easier.”

During the first quarter of 2008, the CARE House treated 193 children. The facility performed 902 medical evaluations last year.
